Research by the Gas Safe Register shows that, 1 in 3 gas consumers in Great Britain (around 7.69 million households) admit they’ve never had their gas appliances checked or maintained, despite 8 in 10 people (82%) recognising that they should do so in order to prevent incidents. It is our challenge, therefore, not only to raise awareness of gas safety, but to actively encourage people to change their behaviour towards gas safety.
Last year we launched the first ever interactive gas map which identifies the most dangerous postcodes in the country. The map, staygassafe.co.uk, reveals how many unsafe gas appliances have been found lurking in an area and is the first time that gas data has been compared across postcodes. The map proved a huge success bringing gas safety right to a person’s doorstep. To build on its success we have now updated it with even more data from Gas Safe Register and the Gas Distribution Networks.
We want to encourage people to visit the gas map to discover gas dangers and risks in their area. We hope that this information will urge consumers to get their gas appliances safety checked and maintained annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. People can also sign up to a free gas safety check reminder service which will alert them when their gas appliances need checking. Customers can choose whether to receive an SMS reminder or an email in a month of their choice. The reminder service aims to overcome one of the main reasons people don’t get a check done…. simply forgetting!
Please help us spread the word and encourage your customers to visit the site, staygassafe.co.uk, and set a reminder for their annual safety check.
