Our dear friend Christopher Hamer, The Property Ombudsman has announced that he will retire at the end of 2015. I met Chris for the first time in York back in 2008 at a meeting for stakeholders of the Rugg Review. We travelled back to London together, talking non-stop about France and at the very end of the journey, Chris asked whether we would train his team.
Since then I have watched the Property Ombudsman’s team grow in numbers as the private rented sector has in turn grown and developed. Chris has been a great advocate for the industry and is most definitely one of the industry’s most well-known figures, if not the most respected. Chris has supported the Guild since 2008 and has always been present at our annual conference. I remember a few years ago a group of female letting agents asking me desperately if Chris would agree to a photo call with them. They were like giggling school girls when he agreed. Whilst for some Chris was considered to be intimidating, for others it was/is his approachability and professionalism that made him such a popular Ombudsman. It has been an honour for me to work alongside Chris – his attention to detail, knowledge and expertise is second to none. He is extremely well respected and well-loved by his team – he will be sorely missed.
Chris will be present at our conference this year so I am sure that we will no doubt be celebrating his success and retirement together.
