Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills
All new staff in the Learning and Skills sector whose main role is teaching, training or tutoring will be required to work towards gaining Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status from September 2007.
These qualifications have been built specifically for the two teaching roles in the sector, identified by the Sector Skills Council, Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK)
The qualifications are made up of the units of assessment that underpin the role specifications and clearly set out the learning
outcomes and assessment criteria that new teachers, trainers and tutors are expected to achieve.
Edexcel Level 3 and 4 BTEC Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning sector - accredited
(six credits)
This comprises of a six credit unit. Learners can choose the level appropriate to their experience and needs. This qualification is
currently available as a pilot for 2006/07.
Who should take this qualification?
This introductory award is a pre-service/new-entrant qualification for anyone wanting to enter teaching or training
in the Lifelong Learning sector. This includes those working in:
• community-based learning and development programmes
• employment and work-based learning
• teaching and training in the further education sector.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification consists of one unit with 30 guided learning hours requiring at least 30 hours of self-directed study and
observed practice or microteaching.
Edexcel Level 3 and 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning sector - approved, awaiting final -
accreditation (min 24 Credits)
Who should take this qualification?
This qualification is suitable for associate teachers who predominantly teach in at least one of the following ways:
• from packs/pre-prepared materials
• on a one-to-one basis
• a programme confined to a particular subject/level/type
of learner
• short courses.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification comprises three mandatory units worth 18 credits and optional units to the value of at least six credits,
making a total of 24 credits. There is also a requirement for 30 hours of teaching practice with some observation.
Edexcel’s Level 3 – 5 BTEC qualifications making up the Teacher Qualification Framework are assessed through a portfolio and
observation. They are externally quality assured in accordance with the current practice applied to Edexcel’s BTEC qualifications
at this level.
